Deborah VanAmerongen is a Strategic Policy Advisor in Nixon Peabody’s Affordable Housing practice group. She works with attorneys in the firm and clients, including developers, owners, managers and funders to craft creative solutions to issues relative to affordable housing development and preservation.  Deborah serves on the Executive Committee of the New York State Association for Affordable Housing, the Board of Editors of Affordable Housing Finance magazine, and the board of the Housing Advisory Group in Washington D.C.

Prior to joining the firm Deborah was Commissioner of Housing for the State of New York, heading up the Division of Housing and Community Renewal and sitting on the board of the NYS Housing Finance Agency, amongst other state housing agencies.  Prior to serving at HCR Deborah was Director of Multifamily Housing for the U.S. Dept. of Housing & Urban Development for the New York City region.  Deborah started her career working in the New York State Assembly, on the Program & Counsel staff on issues including housing, consumer affairs and agriculture.

Deborah has her undergraduate degree from Syracuse University in Political Science, and her Master’s of Public Administration from Rockefeller College at SUNY Albany.  She resides in Los Angeles.
